Cholesterol Screen Available
Posted on: 10/10/2014
In office cholesterol screening is now being offered. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends cholesterol screening for overweight and obese children and adolescents (a body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 85%), or with a family history with risk factors for heart disease. As part of our effort to promote and support healthy lifestyles, we will routinely offer screening to children 9 years and older with BMI’s equal to or greater than 85%.
The cholesterol screen requires a finger stick and does not require fasting. We will be charging $15 for the test, which we will bill to your insurance. Not all insurances will cover this in-office procedure; there may be a co-pay, deductible or co-insurance. Alternatively, you could take your child to a lab to get blood drawn for a charge of approximately $90.00. We suggest that you check with your individual insurance to determine their coverage for cholesterol screening.
